AIA_report on integrated practice 0&2_response

university and industry research in support of BIM

_"most essential aspect is that it is machine readable."
_"the new representation also allows presentations to people that are much easier to comprehend and interpret than drawings...enhanced communication...web-based design reviews and walk-throughs."
_easier for all to read and understand drawings. architecturally-trained eyes not necessary.
_basic idea is that 2D or 3D solid object shapes can be defined according to parameters, some user-defined and some relating to other shapes.
_"[BIM] will automatically update...whenever a wall is moved" <-- all views live. one of the strongest aspects
_"most BIM design tools have the ability to vary the construction layers within a wall." more helpful in construction.
_always a need for improvement in BIM parametric objects
_"each also provides a way to define new objects as well as modify existing ones"
_"architectural firms need to have one or more persons capable of developing new parametric objects"
_developing new parametric objects should be somewhat consist across the spectrum of BIM software so this is more accessible
_"investigations of building systems have been picked up with enthusiasm in the universities, not dealing with current construction practices, but rather for developing new methods of construction"
_developing a new way of conceptual thinking and process is necessary when designing in BIM
_"just as computer animation groups develop avatars with movement and gesture styles, so will architectural software houses develop BIM modeling extensions supporting design styles"
_animated movies created using software like Maya or Rhino?
_"the family immediately adapts to different contextual settings, but guarantees that the design is complete and satisfies required rules and relations"
_more intuitive program leads to fewer mistakes in construction and a better relationship between those involved in the process
_"coordination among the different building trades becomes much simpler than it is currently"
_room for improvement. arguments always arise in this stage.
_"broader implication is that the current productivity gap between construction and manufacturing can be greatly reduced" <-- needed
